BEFORE Tasting Notes:
Colour: Sunlight
Nose: Starch typically on iodine and sticking plasters, the peat is quite sweet but not cloying. There are some wonderfully engaging fruity notes underneath - stewed apples and sweet citrus.
Palate: The peat is more ashy than on the nose - driftwood bonfire, fresh oysters in brine, but all balanced with an appealing sweetness. Fresh green fruits rather than the cooked fruits of the nose.
Finish: Well balanced between sweet and dry, the smoke fades and a salty sweet note emerges.
AFTER Tasting Notes:
Colour: Pale Gold
Nose: Restrained, earthy smoke. Sweet toffee sherry with butterscotch. Gentle fruitiness, buttery baked apple and just the slightest hint of a maritime seashore and very soft peat.
Palate: Dry sherry, brine, smoke, toffee, dense and concentrated. Some fruits, cranberry, and pomegranate. Lovely texture on the palate. Some warming spice appears.
Finish: Off dry and peaty. The sherry seems sweeter now. Long and lingering. A classic Laphroaig with some lovely nuances.
